Remember Func? If you cared about mousepads five or so years ago, chances are you do. At the time, the company’s “sUrface” pads were widely-accepted as being some of the best. We took at a look at its “Archetype” edition way back in January of 2006. I ended up using that same sample for years, though at some point it was relegated and replaced with a Ratpadz XT (which I still love) due to it being a bit grimey. Not long after, the company just seemed to vanish. Ironically enough, I investigated things a couple of months ago only to conclude that Func became yet another one of those companies that hit the market hard, then faded away just as fast.
Well, that opinion changed last week when I received an e-mail announcing the company’s comeback. It’s not immediately clear if the classic line is still being offered (though it is referenced on the website), but a new model called the sUrface 1030 L (and XL) has been announced. It looks fairly similar to the original, but has improved aesthetics and a different surface (one that looks better, in my opinion). In fact, it looks quite a bit like my Ratpadz XT, although the surface is by far smoother on the Func (that’s not to say that matters, however).
We generally don’t review mousepads on the site, and this is unlikely to be an exception, but I found this release to be interesting simply for the fact that I swore by my Archetype for many years. The folks at the company were great to deal with, and the product was excellent – that sort of thing stands out. There’s no word on when these new pads will hit the market, but hopefully it happens soon as they look pretty compelling.
