A couple of weeks ago, G.SKILL came out of nowhere with a mammoth 128GB kit of DDR4 memory. Perhaps the most impressive thing about it was the fact that no current X99-based motherboard (that I’m aware of) supports more than 64GB officially, so even if 128GB is overkill for almost everyone, it’s cool to know that it can still work.
Spec’d at DDR4-2800, G.SKILL’s 8-stick kit wasn’t just high-density, it was also high-performance. But, like most records, this one didn’t last for long. Today, Kingston has announced that it’s made a similar kit, using its HyperX Predator series, and has bumped the speed up to DDR4-3000.
As the screenshot below highlights, this particular kit of RAM is spec’d at 16-16-16-39, which is identical to the G.SKILL kit announced a couple of weeks ago. It should be noted that Kingston tested this kit in MSI’s X99S MPOWER motherboard.
While it might be hard to get excited about the fact that a 128GB kit of memory exists when even 64GB is considered overkill by many, what’s interesting here is simply knowing that 16GB modules are on their way. Once mainstream platforms that support DDR4 get here, that should hopefully mean that the platforms will work just fine with 64GB of memory. As high density sticks go, though, pricing might negate that benefit.
