AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Gaming Processor Review

F1 22 returns to give us further strange results. With our 7950X3D look, we assumed that because the 5800X3D proved so strong, that the 7800X3D would become the new champion – but not so. Overall, this game’s performance is hard to predict, to the point it might be best left as a GPU-focused test instead. 1440p results favored 3D V-Cache chips more, but in the grand scheme, the performance deltas seen there are not that interesting.

Forza Horizon 5

AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D slides in behind the 7950X3D with a single FPS difference at 1080p in Forza Horizon 5, managing to keep ahead of Intel’s top-end 13900K, but not with a large margin. At 1440p, the Zen 4-based X3D chips deliver a similar uplift (if not a bit better, somehow).

Returnal

The scaling we’re seeing in Returnal is downright underwhelming, although that’s not a bad thing per se. As with a couple of the other games in this article, Returnal might be better served as a GPU-focused test rather than a CPU one.

Spider-Man Miles Morales

Miles Morales is one of our favorite games to test, because despite the scenes having the tendency to vary noticably from one manual run to the next, the frame rate is stable enough to be able to report on 0.1% percentiles. AMD probably likes the game quite a bit, also, as its X3D chips keep ahead overall. Miles Morales becomes another game that puts the last-gen 5800X3D ahead of the 7800X3D. That’s not what we’d expect, but it should reassure those who own a 5800X3D that this generation of Zen can be safely skipped over.

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Another test from the 7950X3D review returns, and once again gives us strange results. It seems obvious that this game benefits from Intel’s CPUs more than AMD’s, but 3D V-Cache can help negate that advantage. But then we have results like the 7950X, which sits unexpectedly at the bottom. This is another game that might fare better as a GPU-focused test, but it’s probably nearing the time that it should be replaced by a newer title, anyway.
