Empire Earth II: Review at Jolt.co.uk

“Frankly, we’re sick of moaning about historical RTS games. There are just so many of them attempting to grab your attention, yet most have little in the way of originality and selling points between them. Empire Earth 2 has managed to put a gag on our moaning for now by being an Comment (0) -->

Asus K8N4-E Deluxe Motherboard Review @ PC Stats

“Today, PCStats will be looking at the new Asus K8N4-E Deluxe motherboard. It’s so new that it’s not even up on Asus’s North American website. Based around the nForce4 chipset, this motherboard supports Socket 754 AMD Athlon64 or Sempron processors. It’s memory slots will accommodate up to 3GB of single channel DDR memory. Graphics come courtesy of a standard PCI Express x16 slot, which is the key selling point as far as we’re concerned. Onboard goodies consist of an extra Serial ATA/RAID controller, a 7.1-channel audio codec, IEEE 1394a Firewire and Gigabit LAN.”

Coffee or Password?

“Security vendor VeriSign found 66 percent would choose to give up their passwords for a Starbucks coffee, during an informal on-the-street survey conducted Thursday in San Francisco”

The people didn’t obviously reveal their usernames, but even so. Of course, I would likely give out a fake password for a free latte. Booya. Read it here.

Hackers figure out file extraction from Sony UMD

” Software developers have figured out how to extract files from the Universal Media Discs used in Sony’s new PlayStation Portable handheld video game device, though there is no way to play the games extracted from those discs.”

PSP games will likely never be able to be downloaded illegally and played on the system, however it’s fully possible to create PC emulation for it. Since the files can be extracted, I am sure it’s only a matter of time before that happens. Check out the full article here.

Firefox Coins Successes

“Firefox, the open source web browser, has been downloaded 50 million times since its official launch in November. To celebrate, the Mozilla Foundation, which led its development, is giving away commemorative coins to people who have done the best job promoting it.”

Not sure exactly how they choose the people that get the coin. It’s noted that Firefox has been a main competitor of IE since it’s release, so it will be interesting to watch what happens when IE 7.0 get’s released. Read the article at BBC UK.

Soltek EQ3501-300P SFF @ Viperlair

“Overall, we found the Soltek EQ3501-300P a solid system with a few flaws, both minor and major depending on what you’re looking for in a SFF PC. The system itself is suitable as a full sized system replacement, and if you’re aware of the limitations and can work around them, you’ll be fine. Whether or not you like the appearance though is up to you.”

If SFF is your thing, check out this review at Viper Lair.

ATi MVP Info Revealed @ Hexus!

“The system will run with a master card and slave card. The slave card can be ANY ATI card on the market, which is just about as cool as absolute zero, but (and it’s a big BUT).. the master card, which will control the frame buffer, has to support MVP. The ATI solution runs on a tiled based approach – which has a minimum checkerboard size of 32 pixels square.”

Whew, this is going to make the next few months of computing very interesting. MVP works on a different method than SLi, and ATI fully believes it’s a better way. I can’t wait to see this technology come to light, and I am sure that we will see that MVP will potentially beat the pants off of SLi. Check it out at Hexus!

Sunbeam 20-in-1 Superior Panel @ LAN Addict

“Sunbeam’s 20-in-1 Superior Panel is exactly that! A brilliantly devised and constructed panel to put everything any PC user would need at their finger tips. There are many other panels that could be purchased for your PC, but why go with 2 or 3, when you could simply go with 1?”

Very cool product no doubt. Check it out at Lan Addict.

Understanding and Tweaking Windows XP Services @ PC Stats

“The reason for this occasional slow performance is the same reason why Microsoft Windows XP runs considerably slower than Windows 2000 at times; it’s what’s going on in the background. Every modern operating system needs to run certain processes constantly, regardless of what other programs and operations are currently active and regardless of what the user may be doing. These background processes may be used to detect new hardware, monitor the network for incoming data, or a variety of other things that require the operating system to pay constant attention to its surroundings. In Windows XP, these background processes are called Services and they will be the topic of this edition. We’re going to look at what the WinXP Services are and do, why they are necessary, which ones should be running on your system and which ones you can do without.”
