With all of the recent iPhone 4G news, it might have become all too easy to forget about Apple’s most recent product launch. That was of course the iPad, which, as hard as it may be to believe, was released to the public nearly a full month ago. During the first weekend, Apple managed to sell over 300,000 units, and we knew it was only a matter of time before the 1 million mark was hit.
Well, that mark has been hit today, a mere 28 days after the official launch. For ANY product, that’s impressive, but I find it even more so given the fact that the iPad is a rather unique product, and targets more of a niche audience (most would disagree with me I’m sure). To put the sales numbers into perspective, the original iPhone sold 1 million units in 74 days, and at the time, that was impressive.
Also during the first month of the iPad’s availability, users have downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the iBookstore, a service launched alongside the iPad. In the same time, developers have created over 5,000 apps that specifically take advantage of the iPad’s large multi-touch user interface.
It goes without saying that this feat is impressive, but given the hype and overall good reception the device has received, and the fact that it has an Apple logo on it, huge numbers within the first month were pretty much expected. With all of the hype surrounding the iPhone 4G, we’ll have to wait and see if the iPad’s record can be broken this summer.
CUPERTINO, California—May 3, 2010—Apple today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
