It seems like we’ve been waiting a while for it, but wait no more! Gulftown is here, and that means six cores, “sick scores” and some incredible performance. As always, we have our in-depth review posted to the top of our front page, and we highly recommend you check it out even if you’re not interested in spending $999 on a new processor, because it’s just cool technology.
Gulftown is of course based upon Intel’s Westmere microarchitecture, which is a derivative of Nehalem. Confused? Don’t be, because all you need to know is that we’re dealing with six cores, which happen to be blazing fast, a 32nm process and a barrage of other improvements. Not to mention, Intel has actually decided to upgrade its “Extreme Edition” CPU cooler to one that’s actually very impressive, and yet the price hasn’t changed of the overall package.
Unfortunately, the Core i7-980X is going to be the first and last Gulftown chip we see for a while. But that means whoever becomes an early adopter is going to be able to relax for a while knowing that the CPU they just purchased is actually going to remain the highest-end offering for a while. Unless of course Intel wants to pull a Skulltrail 2 out of its hat, but that’s doubtful.
So check out our review, and be sure to stay tuned to the site, because we might just be launching a fun contest that could possibly be related to Gulftown in the near-future. Maybe.
It’s official. We’re now entering the six-core realm, thanks to Intel’s Gulftown. The first model, Core i7-980X, is more than capable of delivering the sick scores that our title suggests, and along with it, we can begin to see some major benefits of the 32nm process. To sweeten the deal further, Intel even includes an effective new CPU cooler.
