Keeping to its promise of delivering a Game Ready GeForce driver in time for all of the big releases this holiday season, NVIDIA has just dropped a WHQL for Fallout 4.
The latest driver is versioned 358.91, and as it’s a WHQL (not a beta), it can be considered safe to upgrade to. If you’re not going to be playing what’s sure to be another Bethesda masterpiece, you’re safe to overlook upgrading, as 358.91’s sole purpose over the previous release is to boost the game’s performance and stability.
An exception can be made if you haven’t upgraded to the 358 family at all up to this point, as its first release in early October introduced a huge number of profile updates and additions as well as feature rollouts, including SLI support with ShadowPlay and GameStream, and also stereo support for DirectX 12 SLI and 3D Surround.
If you’re wondering what NVIDIA graphics card you should be prepared with to enjoy Fallout 4 to its fullest (which includes enabling the company’s volumetric lighting features), the question has been answered today: A GeForce GTX 970. That card would enable a great experience at 1080p. NVIDIA recommends opting for the GTX 980 Ti for 1440p, which hints at just how strenuous 4K will be. For an in-depth look at FO4 performance, I’d recommend checking out an article posted by our friends at Gamers Nexus.
As a reminder, NVIDIA last week announced a promotion which will see $100,000 worth of prizes be given out to those who opt-in through GeForce Experience to receive all future Game Ready drivers. While that requirement isn’t ideal by most eyes, the chance at some great prizes should help dampen the inconvenience.
Thus far, AMD hasn’t responded with its own FO4-specific driver. We’ll update this post if one happens to come along.
