Microsoft has just released build 10158 of its Windows 10 Preview to those using the “Fast” ring. This build comes exactly one month in advance of the final release of Microsoft’s latest OS, although once that date is hit, those who want to continue testing out bleeding-edge builds will be able to.
One of the most notable changes in 10158 is that Project Spartan has finally been rebranded to Microsoft Edge, a name that was confirmed about two months ago. Because of this name change, Microsoft encourages those who’ve been using Spartan to back up their settings and favorites, as those will not automatically be transferred. Unfortunately, the transitioning process isn’t straight-forward, so you’ll want to hit-up the official blog post for instructions.
The Edge name change might be a big deal, but the browser also received a slew of enhancements. One enhancement is the addition of a “Home” button, as well as the ability to import bookmarks from other browsers. Not feeling the default Edge theme? You’ll be happy to know that a dark one has been made available. Overall, most of the Edge updates are related to just smoothing out rough edges, preparing it for final launch. The same could be said about the updates in general to these preview builds.
Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana has also received a major update, especially with regards to integration with Office 365. The company has also overhauled its Photos app, but to get it, you’ll need to search for the beta on the store.
With Windows 10 set to launch at the end of next month, it’s hard to say how many more builds we’ll be getting. It could be that we’ll begin to see them issued at an accelerated rate leading up to the launch, simply because there’s so much fine-tuning to be done. That’s a good thing – Windows 10 will undoubtedly become Microsoft’s most stable OS launch ever.
