4K/144Hz G-SYNC monitors have been rumored for launch for a number of months, but we now have actual proof that some models will be gracing store shelves (digital or otherwise) soon. As in… this month, potentially. This is according to KitGuru, which talked to NVIDIA’s G-SYNC PM Vijay Sharma at a London event this week.
In short, these new 4K/144Hz monitors are going to deliver the highest reasonable resolution available to consumers with frame-smoothing at the highest refresh rate available (for 4K). The obvious caveat here is that to deliver those kinds of framerates at that resolution, powerful GPUs or weaker games are going to have to be used.
Consider this: when we tackled Destiny 2 performance last winter, we found that it took dual GTX 1080 Tis to hit 121 FPS at max detail. Since then, NVIDIA has piled on enough driver improvements for the game that I wouldn’t be the least-bit surprised if that 121 FPS became 144 FPS based on nothing more than the driver itself.
At this event, an ASUS PG27UQ and Acer X27 were shown-off, both of which adhere to the 144Hz refresh rate. Coincidentally, Destiny 2 was the game being shown-off, and it’s probably for the reason that it’s hugely optimized on NVIDIA, and looks amazing with HDR (I am not going to mention names, but even an AMD friend told me that nothing beats Destiny 2 for HDR examples).
If there’s an immediate downside here, it’s exclusively related to the size of the panels themselves. These are 27-inch monitors, which means they’re best targeting those who sit in front of their PC and want a much clearer image than what 1440p (and especially 1080p) can provide.
If you want an even bigger monitor for the living room, you’ll have to wait for the BFGD (Big Format Gaming Display), which will come to us in the form of 40-inch+ models. We still don’t know what those will cost, or when they’re even going to arrive, but it’s not like you’re going to go run out and buy another 40-inch+ 4K/120Hz HDR G-SYNC monitor, right?
