OCZ must of thought the original RevoDrive was too slow, because just a few months later it’s announced the RevoDrive X2! The original PCIe based SSD came about as a result of hitting limitations with the SATA II interface. SSD technology was developing faster than the interface could keep up, so by removing SATA and going straight through the PCIe interface, the only bottleneck would be the SSD controller. As powerful as the SandForce controller was, it wasn’t enough, so OCZ bolted two together in a RAID 0, made it bootable, and the RevoDrive was born.
At 540MB/s and 75,000 IOPS, the RevoDrive was no slouch, easily surpassing all other single drive SSDs in our tests. Not to sit on it’s laurels, OCZ decided to up the ante and release a new version, the RevoDrive X2. With 4 x SandForce-1200 controllers in RAID 0, pumping out 740MB/s and 120,000 IOPS, OCZ is on a mission to produce some of the fastest SSDs out there. Available in sizes 100GB to 960GB, storage shouldn’t be a problem either, but no word yet on price. If the original drive is anything to go by, pricing should be reasonable.
The drive uses a PCIe x4 interface and remains bootable. As for speed, we have one inbound for testing, so we’ll be able to check the 740MB/s read and 720MB/s write performance for ourselves. Keep an eye out, things should be interesting.
SAN JOSE, CA—October 28, 2010—OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ),a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) and memory modules for computing devices and systems, announces the launch of The RevoDrive X2 PCI-Express SSD, a follow-up to the successful launch of the first RevoDrive, with increased performance and capacity to serve high-performance computing consumers. The RevoDrive X2 upgrades the original architecture to deliver unprecedented speed up to 740MB/s and up to 120,000 IOPS, nearly triple the throughput of other high-end SATA-based solutions with a substantial reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) to the consumer. The product is available now through OCZ’s global channel.
