During our last solid-state drive review we observed that the 120GB OCZ Vertex drives were selling for $289 after rebate, which works out to be $2.41 per GB. For an all-around solid performance drive that is capable of both respectable sequential writes and random small file operations, we awarded the Vertex Turbo our rare Editor’s Choice award.
Offering sequential write speeds above the 80MB/s limit of the 80GB X25-M G2 certainly helped, too. Unfortunately, as we noted at the end of our review the prices on the 120GB Vertex SSD increased by an eye-popping $75 before the review went live. At the time, this ruined the attractive pricing of the drive and even made the Vertex Turbo a cheaper buy!
We also wrote that should the regular OCZ 120GB Vertex drop below $300 that we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as an affordable, high performing SSD to get. For at least today, Newegg is offering the OCZ Vertex 120GB for $299 shipped after $30 rebate. And for those considering RAIDing two cheap SSDs together for performance, the 30GB Vertex is $80 shipped after a $25 rebate. Newegg’s pricing is for today only, and the rebates will end on April the 8th, so don’t wait too long.
While our review was of the Vertex Turbo model, the performance difference will amount to roughly 5% worst case, more than likely performance between the Turbo and non-Turbo will be even less. Even so, for those that want no compromise Newegg also has the Vertex Turbo on sale at the lowest price we have ever observed to date, $319 shipped after $30 a rebate.
If the OCZ Vertex isn’t the SSD you were waiting for, then a quick browse to Newegg might still be worth your while as almost all popular SSDs have received temporary price reductions. Again these prices are only guaranteed for Friday only and only as long as there is stock, whichever runs out first.
Making the decision to upgrade to an SSD isn’t difficult, but finding the “perfect” SSD is a different story thanks to the sheer amount of choice out there; sometimes even from the same vendor! Fortunately, OCZ’s Vertex Turbo delivers a great blend of performance and GB per dollar, making it well worth consideration.
