F.E.A.R. Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 10:29 AM by Rob Williams

For a while now, Monolith has been getting screwed when it comes to delivering great games that simply don’t sell. The release of the instant classic No One Lives Forever (and its equally great sequel) proved to reviewers out there that these guys have what it takes to make a top-quality game,…..

AoE III Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 10:26 AM by Rob Williams

I love the Age of Empires franchise, I believe that this is one of the best Real Time Strategy games around, and my beliefs are proved true with each new game that comes out. The talented developers at Ensemble Studios really help innovate this genre by putting in new concepts and ideas…..

Lifting your case to allow better airflow?

Posted on October 17, 2005 10:23 AM by Rob Williams

Most homes in the U.S. have carpeted floor; we all know too well most ATX tower cases anchored or sunken into the carpet with those tiny rubber pads called feet. Are you sick and tired of dragging your PC from under the desk out? How about letting in more outside air? $4 to get your rig higher on the rug in 5 minutes and get more air from your front panel for $1 in about 30 minutes.

This is a great idea, and I’m sure many do it already. It may be a simple ‘mod’ that I may have to consider myself. Check it out at MadShrimps.

8 hours on an Xbox 360

Posted on October 17, 2005 10:15 AM by Rob Williams

Let it never be said that Microsoft can’t throw a good party. Tuesday they flew me and 9 other gamers from various forums up to New York City, gave us a stay in a wonderful 400 dollar per night hotel room, and then gave us some hands on time with the Xbox 360 with several games, as well as a look at some of the system’s features.

This is a great write-up, and has a great breakdown of the launch games. It’s like a punch in the gut though, because PD: Zero and NFS: Most Wanted were two games I was going to buy on launch day.. but he rated them as dissapointing. Check out the full look here. Feel free to discuss the above article and more in our forums.

Futuremark Interview

Posted on October 17, 2005 10:12 AM by Rob Williams

Over the years, Futuremark Corporation have scheduled the launch of their popular benchmark program, 3DMark, such that it coincides with various other key moments in 3D graphics hardware and software industry – for example, a new version of DirectX or a new generation of graphics cards. 3DMark05 was their first move at having a benchmark that fully required SM2.0 support from the graphics card and with the board market now having three SM3.0 implementations (two from NVIDIA and one from ATI), we felt it was time to have a good chat with Futuremark.

Easily one of the most loved and hated software companies, there is still no doubt that they have an effect on how we benchmark out games. Check out the interesting interview they had with Beyond3D here.

eVGA e-GeForce 6800GT PCI-E Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:35 AM by Rob Williams

Although the NVIDIA 7800GTX has a definitive advantage over
the 6800GT, the GeForce 6800GT remains a respectable card for
enthusiasts not wishing to shell out nearly $500 USD for a graphics
upgrade. With us today we have the eVGA GeForce 6800GT 256MB and will
see just how well this card can fare through overclocking and just how
the card can fare against a 7800GTX in a dual-core environment.

Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 Rev.3 *7800 Series* Compatible Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:33 AM by Rob Williams

I’m going to get right to the point here. The Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 Rev.3 costs around £15 from UK Vendors. For me it’s a no brainer. If you are lucky enough to own a 7800 you owe it to yourself to buy one. It’s incredibly easy to install, looks great and the performance is so very worth even double the price they charge.

If you want better cooling on your 7800, but don’t want to use water, check out the full review of this GPU cooler at Pure Overclock.

Thermaltake Blue Orb II AMD Athlon 64 & Intel Pentium 4 Heatsink Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:32 AM by Rob Williams

This Thermaltake Blue Orb II has clean lines, look stunning especially when running with its internal LEDs and works very well. What more can you ask from a heatsink. It does what it says it will do.

Check out the full review of this great looking cooler at A1 Electronics.

Sony VAIO VGN-S480 Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:19 AM by Rob Williams

The Sony VAIO S480 is the perfect notebook for people that don’t want to compromise on performance when it comes to their lightweight laptop. With a 2.13GHz processor, 100GB hard drive, DVD+/-RW dual layer drive, and integrated GeForce Go 6200, the S480 has the power to replace a modest desktop PC. But, with a 13.3″ XBRITE widescreen display and a weight of just 4.3 pounds, this powerhouse just barely misses a classification of an ultra lightweight laptop. While the battery life could be better, and this first class package comes at a first class price, the VAIO S480 is a top contender all around.

If you want one of the best looking notebooks available, and are willing to part with a wallet full of money, check out the full review at Design Technica.

Enermax Pandora Mesh CA3030-BS Mid Case

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:17 AM by Rob Williams

Not everyone is into huge cases with window side panels. Or cases with glossy paint jobs that you leave all kinds of finger prints on. Some people just want a Mesh CA3030 mid case from Enermax. The Mesh 3030 gives you above simple styling but also gives you full functionality. The Mesh 3030 provides good air circulation and limits dust from entering the case. The Mesh advertises a lot for a little (money).

For the price range, this is one great looking case. Read all about it at Pro-Clockers.

AMD Outlines Future Technology Directions

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:17 AM by Rob Williams

AMD HAS BEEN rather tight-lipped about its future plans recently, as we’ve noted. Its public CPU roadmap was last revised in March and doesn’t extend beyond the end of this year, with no major product changes slated between now and then. This situation has led us to puzzle over exactly what AMD has in store for 2006 and beyond, and Friday’s grand opening of Fab 36 presented an opportunity to find out. AMD’s new CTO, Phil Hester, led a brief session about AMD’s future technology directions, where he sketched some of the company’s microprocessor plans. Afterwards, we had the chance to ask him a few questions, as well.

Mashie Design MDVA

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:14 AM by Rob Williams

Modding products, where did they go? It seems like we never see any new case mods at all. Well if you’re into case modding at all, then I’m sure you have heard of Mashie. If not take a look at his website. As you can see he is very talented. He has come up with a great product that you will not see in other PC’s out there. It comes from his case mod called Anemone, and it is called the Mashie Design Visual Audio, or MVDA. Finally, a new modding product, are you excited??

This is an amazing mod, it beats the pants off Winamp plugins any day! Check out the full review over at Think Computers.

Interview with Tony Bove, Author of "Just Say No to Microsoft"

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:12 AM by Rob Williams

This is an interview with Tony Bove, author of the upcoming book, “Just Say No to Microsoft”. With this book Bove intends to help readers rid Microsoft from their life- this is easier said that done, but it is certainly possible. The book goes on to list alternatives to the Microsoft programs on which people have become dependent and probably think they cannot give up. Bove is outspoken in his dislike of Microsoft’s practices and has established a plan to help any computer user “just say no”. The book comes to us from NoStarch publishing, a popular name geek literature.

This is an interesting review, especially if your goal is to rid Windows from your system. Check it out at XYZ Computing.

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400PRO 2GB Dual Channel Kit Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:07 AM by Rob Williams

Corsair’s DDR2 solutions continue to surprise us. This time it’s a 2GB offering of great Micron fatbody D9s. Added to that is
Corsair’s signature flashing activity LEDs! Sounds good? We sure think so.

These modules are a dream if you are in need of DDR2. The only problem is the price, but that’s to be expected with ultra fast DDR2. Check out the full review at InsaneTek.

Thermaltake Tai-Chi Super Tower Chassis Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:05 AM by Rob Williams

Installation is a dream. There is so much room in the case you don’t have to worry about whether or not everything is going to fit. In fact, the toughest part about the install was deciding exactly where I wanted my 5.25″ drive bays to be installed in relation to the power switch. Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with the front panel layout, because it’s left totally up to you to determine what works the best for your install.

This case is no doubt gorgeous. It is easily one of the best cases I have seen released this year! Definitely check out the full review over at Big Bruin.

Bytecc LANDISK NAS Hard Drive Enclosure Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:03 AM by Rob Williams

One device that makes data even easier to share on a network is an
external NAS hard drive. Just as a router allows you to share a single
Internet connection without the need for any particular computer to be on,
a NAS (which stand for Network Attached Storage) hard drive allows you to
share a drive full of data without needing any particular computer to be
on. As the availability and popularity of NAS drives continue to rise, NAS
enclosures are becoming more available as well. A NAS enclosure allows you
to turn any hard drive, old or new, into an external NAS drive. One example
is the LANDISK enclosure from Bytecc, which is the subject of this review.

Cooler Master Ammo 533 Review

Posted on October 17, 2005 9:02 AM by Rob Williams

The Ammo 533 is definitely one of those cases that you would either
buy or turn away because of its looks. Ultimately, the Ammo 533 is a unique
case and definitely a good LAN case. The screwless design, handle, meshed
side panel and oversized buttons really set it apart from other cases on the
market today.

Google Gets Gaim Guy

Posted on October 16, 2005 11:05 AM by Rob Williams

It shouldn’t be surprising that Google aggressively goes after the best talent in the business. Google’s nascent IM business is apparently no exception.

To that end, Google has hired the lead developer of the Gaim instant messaging project, one of the most popular open source projects on the planet, to help its IM development.

Google is doing a great job of getting the best talent. I have used GAIM as my primary chat client for over a year, and am loving it. Check out the full news posting at Internet News.

MTV buys iFilm for $49 million

Posted on October 16, 2005 11:04 AM by Rob Williams

MTV Networks, a division of Viacom, has acquired online video purveyor iFilm for $49 million, the companies said Friday. As previously reported, the deal was expected to come together this week. iFilm, a privately held company in Los Angeles, distributes short videos from Hollywood studios and amateur filmmakers over the Web, drawing more than 10 million visitors a month, the company said.

Wow. Sometimes I just don’t realize how huge a website is until it’s bought by a large company for an insane amount of cash. Read all about it at News.com.

XFX GeForce 7800 GTX Review

Posted on October 16, 2005 11:01 AM by Rob Williams

In the last couple years, XFX has really catered to the enthusiast and hardcore gamer, and its commitment seems stronger than ever with its 7 Series offerings. Currently, XFX doesn’t even offer a GeForce 7800 GTX at NVIDIA’s stock speeds (430MHz core and 1.2GHz memory). Instead, the company offers a 7800 GTX that runs factory overclocked with the engine clock at 450MHz and memory clock at 1.25GHz and another one at 490MHz and 1.3GHz, respectively. Additionally, XFX is bundling the popular Battlefield 2 with one of the higher overclocked versions for a limited time.

Serious Sam 2 Review

Posted on October 16, 2005 10:59 AM by Rob Williams

The story, or what little there is of one, is based around Sam having to secure five parts of an ancient medallion in order to do whatever the hell it does so he can get to fight the mysterious villain Mental. The cutscenes, which should’ve been rendered live in the game engine,…..

OpenOffice.org Fifth Anniversary

Posted on October 16, 2005 10:50 AM by Rob Williams

On 13 October 2000 Sun Microsystems donated the source of StarOffice to the open-source community. Sun remains the project’s chief sponsor and contributor, though the project can now boast contributions from Novell, Red Hat, Debian, Intel, and many other large and small companies, plus the very important and numberless contributions from independent developers, NGOs, and government agencies. All these have made OpenOffice.org not just a free alternative productivity suite but the best and most advanced productivity suite. And also a great community.

The final release of OpenOffice should be out in a few days, but there is a release candidate available now. Download it at OpenOffice.

U.S. Tops Spammers List

Posted on October 16, 2005 10:48 AM by Rob Williams

Despite legislative and legal pressure, the United States remains the world’s worst offender when it comes to the origin of spam, though South Korea and China are fast catching up, a software security company said Wednesday. To identify the top 12 countries where span originates, London-based enterprise security software company Sophos looked at spam messages received in its network of spam traps.

Spam spam go away, do not come back another day. Check out the full article at Red Herring.

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X1024-5400UL 1GB Dual Channel Kit Review

Posted on October 16, 2005 10:42 AM by Rob Williams

Corsair wowed us with their blazing fast PC2-8000UL DDR2 memory. The PC2-5400UL is the first low latency DDR2 that started it all.
Is it still a formidable choice for overclocking enthusiasts?
