Google’s Summer of Code Concludes

Posted on September 22, 2005 1:15 PM by Rob Williams

Google’s Summer of Code (SOC), a program that matched computer science students with free and open source software (FOSS) projects and paid for results, is over. Despite some organizational problems, the SOC attracted an overwhelming response from both students and projects, and early indications are that the program has produced a wide range of projects and attracted a number of promising students to the FOSS communities. Whether the program will be repeated, however, remains undetermined.

This was a great project to watch, and it appears the outcome was pretty good. 88% of the projects have been completed. Check out a lot more info at NewsForge.

Sony to lay off 10,000

Posted on September 22, 2005 1:14 PM by Rob Williams

Sony on Thursday announced a companywide restructuring that will result in the loss of 10,000 jobs, the closure of 11 plants and the end of its existing network system.

The world’s second-largest consumer electronics maker said it expects to save $1.8 billion in the process as it refocuses its efforts on electronics, televisions, digital imaging, DVD recorders and portable audio. Of the 10,000 in job cuts, the company said it will slash 4,000 jobs in Japan and 6,000 jobs elsewhere.

Maxtor Shared Storage Drive 200 GB Review

Posted on September 22, 2005 1:12 PM by Rob Williams

To all appearances, the idea of standalone storage drives has solidly captured the minds of computer periphery manufacturers — the pioneer shared hard drive NetDisk NDU10-120 from Ximeta was followed by a number of similar products, including the nearly “wire free” ASUS WL-HDD2.5.

AMD Athlon64-X2-3800+ Review

Posted on September 22, 2005 1:10 PM by Rob Williams

With the latest stepping of the dual processor series, AMD dishes up the Manchester core to set new standards in energy efficiency and price/performance ratio. Taking advantage of the proverbial excellent gaming and floating point performance and stripping the dual cores of 50% of their hard-earned cache in combination with a frequency sweetspot of 2.0 GHz results in a killer CPU at a reasonable price tag. Arguably, there are cheaper processors on the market, there are faster cores out there (as measured in clock frequency) and there are “the others” but after wrapping up this review, there is nothing out there that combines that many positive features as the Manchester running at 2.0 GHz, using the moniker X2-3800+.

Advent Rising Review

Posted on September 22, 2005 1:01 PM by Rob Williams

Impressive production values and a well-written story that’s heavy on character development and scope help make Advent Rising one of the more memorable 3rd-person shooters in recent history. Unfortunately, a poorly-implemented targeting system and several glitches prevent this from becoming the stellar title it was meant to be. Written by famed sci-fi…..

Vantec AVOX Jukebox Multimedia Player Video Review

Posted on September 22, 2005 12:59 PM by Rob Williams

This is a brilliant product if you don’t have a Home Theater PC. The reason being, you don’t need to have a PC connected to the audio/video equipment to listen to music, watch movies or look at your photos. Setup is quick & easy because it’s high speed USB2 & uses a 2.5″ HDD so there lots of storage space. What an excellent idea! Watch the Video to find out more…

PixelView GeForce 7800 GTX 256MiB Review

Posted on September 22, 2005 12:55 PM by Rob Williams

Given how every 7800 GTX is going to be as near as dammit to the reference design, if bundles and pre-overclocking don’t bother you, you’ll probably find yourself going for the cheapest, which could give this card an edge. You might, however, find yourself looking at a 7800 GT with a better bundle and cheaper still, while offering almost the same level of performance.

NVIDIA Forceware Revisited

Posted on September 22, 2005 12:54 PM by Rob Williams

NVIDIA quickly responded to gamers’ complaints about bugs in Forceware 77.72
by releasing new drivers. The latest Forceware version is version 78.01. Of
course, we’re intrigued – partly to see whether or not the bugs we’ve found
are fixed. We even take these drivers for a spin in Battlefield 2. Our
conclusion: these drivers some improvements, but still retains the same
bugs.

And all this fits neatly inside a standard computer case and is very easy to install as you have seen.

This past summer Opera Software ASA’s CEO, Jon S. von
Tetzchner, promised to swim from Norway to the United States if they
reached one million downloads in four days. As expected, this marketing
ordeal generated a wealth of publicity for its Opera 8 Browser and today
they have made another strategic move by eliminating all advertising
banners and licensing fees relating to its latest Opera web-browser.

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Benchmarks

Posted on September 21, 2005 4:25 PM by Rob Williams

Many gamers believe Lost Coast is resource hungry because of the HDR. This is not strictly the case. Lost Coast features very high resolution textures, and the infamous Fisherman character has double the number of polygons than a typical Half-Life 2 character does. It all adds up, in line with the design brief. We will see HDR next week Day of Defeat: Source, and that will be a clearer indication of the impact of HDR in a “normal” game, rather than a souped-up technology demo level.

This is a tease, the screenshots are amazing. You can see how your system will stack up when the level is released, and also download a teaser video. Check it out at Bit-Tech.

FIC Ice Cube HU61 Barebones Review

Posted on September 21, 2005 3:06 PM by Rob Williams

Everyone has fans in their system, even people running water cooling, the only exception you may find is someone running a vapor cooled system. In any case you want something that will keep your temperatures low and for some the added benefit of quietness is a major plus. Myself I don’t mind listening to fans howl at high speeds, but some enjoy the bliss of a nice quiet system.

Posted on September 21, 2005 2:47 PM by Rob Williams

Thermaltake has recently released the Golden Orb II. Now they have the Blue Orb II. This cooler is a good deal bigger than its golden brother, which results in seriously improved cooling performance. Also the fan seems to have been improved – cools better, but not much louder.

This is a great looking cooler, but HUGE. Check it out at techPowerUp!

also beneficial. OCZ’s Value Pro 2GB kit will not break your wallet and will still overclock.

AOpen Aeolus 7800GTX-DVD256 Review

Posted on September 21, 2005 2:39 PM by Rob Williams

What can you say about a 7800GTX? The most powerful video card on the
market at this time certainly did not disappoint in this review and managed
to make me look twice at certain results. The AOpen Aeolus 7800GTX-DVD256 is
not a lot different from any of the other 7800GTX cards out there and is
pretty much identical to the other manufacturers such as EVGA, XFX, and BFG
brands.
