PDP Systems Patriot PC3200 XBLK Review

Posted on July 13, 2005 2:19 PM by Rob Williams

PDP Systems with its introduction of Patriot Memory +XBLK line takes dead aim at the DDR enthusiasts. They bring to market tight timings and flexible VDimm requirements to allow you to stretch the usability of a PC3200 Module to that of a PC4200 Module. A well done introduction into the market space, giving us yet another vendor for serious consideration when choosing our memory.

ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon X800 XL for PCI Express Feature Preview

Posted on July 13, 2005 2:17 PM by Rob Williams

The change to the Microtune 2121 does the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon X800 XL for PCI Express a lot of favours in Europe, technically, with a knock-on effect of increased feature set. The 400MHz X800 XL and AIW features, on PCI Express, should make it a massive seller in the UK and Europe when it appears later in the summer.

Point of View GeForce 7800 GTX Review

Posted on July 13, 2005 2:15 PM by Rob Williams

Let’s dig a little deeper into the chip. As you know the number of transistors in the actual silicon gives us a nice idea about performance. Intel’s new Pentium 4 6xx series for example have 169 million transistors. The GeForce 6800 already had 222 million transistors. And now the GeForce 7800 GTX has 302 million transistors, crazy huh? It’s being manufactured on a 0.11 micron fabrication process.

This is not a company I’ve heard of before. It’s good to see new names on the market. Check out the full review at Guru3D.

MSI Mega Stick 511 Review

Posted on July 13, 2005 2:11 PM by Rob Williams

Mp3 Players, seems like a lot of companies are making them now in some form or another. MSI, maker of fine motherboards and graphics cards, is another company getting into this as well. MSI makes fine products, they get great reviews for all their products I have seen. I myself own an MSI 6600GT video card, and I have to say it is awesome. So, of course when I was offered the chance to review a product from MSI, I jumped right on it. I have owned Philips mp3 Players in the past, when the technology was still rather new, and I was very curious to see just how far it has come.

Thermaltake Golden Orb II Review

Posted on July 13, 2005 2:01 PM by Rob Williams

After a long disappearance, it’s back. Thermaltake reincarnates the Orb family with the Golden Orb II. The original Golden Orb was great for Socket 370, but can this one continue the original fame?

Coolmax 500W SLI Power Supply Video Review

Posted on July 12, 2005 8:20 PM by Rob Williams

If you’re in the market for an SLI Power Supply and are on a budget you will definitely want to check out the Coolmax 500W Power Supply. With 500 watts of power it has no problem providing enough juice for today’s demanding computer systems. There are also plenty of leads and a very quiet 120mm fan. It even comes with a fan control speed switch so the fan speed can be set to automatic, high or low. Watch the Video to find out more…

AMD reveals 64-bit Sempron prices

Posted on July 12, 2005 1:19 PM by Rob Williams

AMD has released prices of its Sempron processors, including the 64-bit lineups featuring the Socket-754 architecture. AMD Taiwan has indicated that Socket-A models are more expensive than the Socket-754 ones in the price list because it hopes to accelerate the transition between the architectures.

Unit prices of 32-bit AMD Socket-754 processors are US$9-10 cheaper than the Socket-A Sempron ones. In addition, the price gap between the 64-bit Sempron processors and 32-bit ones with the same architecture is only US$3-6.

These actually don’t seem to bad for a budget processor. Check out the posting at PC Pro.

PowerColor RADEON X800 XL 512MB Review

Posted on July 12, 2005 1:17 PM by Rob Williams

What do you want from a £290 video card today? Is it performance, performance, and yet more performance in present games, or is it a deal of futureproofing at the expense of, you’ve guessed it, performance. PowerColor’s X800 XL 512MB pricing treads dangerously on X850-class water, which is a great deal faster in almost every conceivable gaming scenario.

If they made 1GB 6200 cards, I am sure people would buy it. Check out the review at Hexus.

SunbeamTech Pro-Series Lite Up Keyboard Review

Posted on July 12, 2005 1:15 PM by Rob Williams

Of all the illuminated keyboards we’ve come across, the brightest has been the Phone Smart LED from Logisys. The keyboard offers an individual LED under every single key on the keyboard rather than an EL wire. Up for review today, we have the SunbeamTech Pro-Series Lite Up Keyboard. The keyboard continues to use an EL wire but just how well does it really perform?

Purchasing a laptop is a large investment, and one that can be complicated by all of the options, manufacturers, and technical mumbo-jumbo that needs to be sifted through. Before you spend a lot of money on a laptop, it is important to spend a little time considering some basics that may affect the decision-making process. This Tech Tip will take a look at five of the innumerous things worth considering when buying a laptop computer.

My tip: Don’t buy a laptop with a low end video card if you want to game. I made that mistake with the 5200FX Go. Check out the full article at Big Bruin.

Thermaltake Big Typhoon Review

Posted on July 12, 2005 1:12 PM by Rob Williams

It’s been a long time since an air cooler has impressed us, and the Thermaltake Big Typhoon delivers in a big (no pun intended) way. We’ve seen massive coolers before, but in the past, not even the biggest coolers were able to power past the Koolance EXOS. While the EXOS still has the advantage at its highest speeds, the noise levels are much louder than the Big Typhoon which is near silent.

Silex Hi-Speed USB Device Server Review

Posted on July 12, 2005 1:11 PM by Rob Williams

The USB bus has been a boon for computer device manufacturers. No matter how simple or complex their devices may be, there is a relatively simple connection standard that they can all use – Universal Serial Bus. The only problem with USB is that it is a master/slave bus which requires a USB host controller and those have historically only been installed in the computer itself. Sharing a USB device could only be done if the device was connected to a PC. If that PC is turned off or unavailable, the USB device is too.

Uber-high-resolution gaming on today’s GPUs

Posted on July 12, 2005 12:53 PM by Rob Williams

WHEN WE SET OUT TO review the new GeForce 7800 GTX graphics card, we faced a somewhat unusual conundrum. How could we push the performance limits of this impressively fast new card with today’s games? More acutely, how could we test the limits of two of them working together in SLI mode? This is a graphics solution so powerful, the vast majority of games available today just don’t present much of a challenge for it.

OCZ PC4800 Dual Channel Platinum Limited Edition Memory Review

Posted on July 11, 2005 7:01 PM by Rob Williams

OCZs PC4800 Dual-Channel Platinum Limited Edition kit of two 512MB sticks of DDR are aimed directly at the performance user, but these puppies aren’t cheap. Still with speeds of up to 300MHz with 2.5-4-4-10 memory timings (at 2.85V) the timings are pretty quick, but not quite at the level of 2-2-5. Still, DDR600 is definitely an impressive feat and tight timings are not as important to the AMD Athlon64 as they are to Intel Pentium 4 systems.

Introduction to the nVidia GeForce 7800GTX Series

Posted on July 11, 2005 5:51 PM by Rob Williams

Summer has come, the birds are singing, the leaves are green, and we have a new graphics chipset from nVidia to write about. The GeForce 7800GTX chipset has a simple purpose; to catapult nVidia back onto the ‘fastest, most expensive videocard’ throne. Obviously, it and its inevitable series of ultra-extreme-pro-express offshoots will make up the high-end of nVidia’s next wave come christmas time, but for now it’s a lone gunfighter with sights set squarely on ATI’s X850XT PE videocard. nVidia has stated that the 7800GTX GPU should make any modern game smoothly playable at 1600×1200 with 4XAA when partnered with a current high-end processor. This is not the most ambitious goal in the world, since today’s top level videocards can more or less accomplish the same feat.

Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 Gaming Laptop Review

Posted on July 11, 2005 1:25 PM by Rob Williams

The Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 is the fastest laptop I have ever tested. This laptop was designed for one thing and one thing only – to win the game and look good doing it. Dell making powerful laptops is nothing new, they’ve been doing it for quite a while and sell more notebooks than anyone else. However, Dell making a good looking notebook is something that is not common to them.

Months after it’s release, this is still the definite killer notebook around. Check out the full review over at TheTechZone.

Biostar NF4UL-A9 Review

Posted on July 11, 2005 1:18 PM by Rob Williams

Our last review of a Biostar board was when we tested their nForce 3 250GB offering, the K8NHA Grand. Today we are evaluating their latest board as they upgrade to Socket 939 and to PCI Express with the nForce 4 Ultra based NF4UL-A9. Unique to this board is the XGP port which is an AGP port that can be used instead of the PCI Express graphics port.

Athlon 64 Revision E: Unofficial DDR500 Support

Posted on July 11, 2005 1:15 PM by Rob Williams

AMD’s 90nm Athlon 64s have been almost everything that the enthusiast community has wanted them to be. Being little more than a die shrink, the 90nm chips are cooler, can run faster, and are cheaper to make than their 130nm counterparts. But the improvements didn’t stop with the move to 90nm. More recently, AMD has released their Revision E 90nm Athlon 64 cores, which featured a number of small improvements.

This is the reason I could hit DDR600 in our latest review. Check out the full article at AnandTech.

Key hacker magazine faces closure

Posted on July 11, 2005 1:13 PM by Rob Williams

The in-house magazine of the digital underground, Phrack is closing after 20 years as its editorial team steps down.

As much manifesto as hacking handbook, the magazine was hugely influential in the early days of hacker culture.

Updates to the magazine have been scarce lately anyway, so people knew it was coming. It was definitely an in-depth resource for computer security though. Check out the full posting here.

Cooler Master Hyper 6+ Review

Posted on July 11, 2005 1:11 PM by Rob Williams

Cooler Master could be regarded as one of the cooling authorities when it comes to enthusiast products. It’s in the elite league with Thermalright, Thermaltake, and Swiftech, just to name a few. I believe it was about a year ago when Cooler Master first released the Hyper 6; combined with heatpipes and a large number of fins, this giant was able to cool the hottest machines.
