Athlon 64 FX57 Performance Preview @ AMD Zone

Posted on June 16, 2005 9:21 AM by Rob Williams

It is hard to believe, but it has been since October 18th of last year since AMD released a faster speed grade. That CPU was the Athlon 64 FX55 which was released along with the 4000+, and came 5 months after the FX53 and 3800+. Then a picture of me, a bunch of our my lan party guys, and some model went up on the FX product page. Now back to the FX55 release. That was an astonishing 8 months ago, and is a far cry from 2000 when CPU releases were like full moons. You knew you were having one coming every month.

They easily overclocked it to 3.0GHz, so with a fair amount of tweaking, I’m sure it can go much higher. Check out the in-depth look at AMD Zone.

AGEIA Interview @ Gaming Nexus

Posted on June 16, 2005 9:08 AM by Rob Williams

GamingNexus: First off can you talk about what products AGEIA is developing?
Andy Keane: AGEIA is developing the PhysX technology. This technology includes the PhysX processor, its supporting driver software and the PhysX software (NovodeX). This processor is expected to be available in PC add-in cards by Christmas 2005.

Very interesting interview. It seems that the prospected price will be between $250 – $300, pricy! It will also require a seperate power connecter and will eat up around 25w. Check out the full interview at GamingNexus.

Sony PSP – Hacked, Cracked, Attacked!

Posted on June 16, 2005 9:03 AM by Rob Williams

NEW YORK – Gaming enthusiasts have figured out how to run unauthorized programs and games on the U.S. version of
Sony Corp’s new handheld game console.

Like its rivals, Sony had tried to keep its new PlayStation Portable on a tight leash, installing controls so it couldn’t run programs and games not vetted and licensed by the company.

Of course this was only a matter of time. It’s always just a matter of time. Check it out at Yahoo News.

Beginners Guides: Overclocking the CPU, Motherboard & Memory

Posted on June 16, 2005 9:01 AM by Rob Williams

The prospect of overclocking a computer system can be intimidating for a computer newcomer, to say the least. The idea is simple enough; make the computer’s processor run faster than its stock speed to gain more performance without paying for it. The execution of this idea though, can be anything but simple.

Corsair XMS TWINX1024-4400C25PT Dual Channel DDR @ BigBruin

Posted on June 16, 2005 8:55 AM by Rob Williams

If you want to get to 600DDR speeds with tight timings, TCCD chips are your only choice. If you want some of the best-implemented TCCD sticks made (and soon to be the only ones made), then Corsair is the deal. What surprised me most was how high the memory would go without any tweaking at all. Talk about plug and play overclocking! I have owned many sticks of Corsair over the years and have never had even one issue at all with any of them not exceeding my expectations in quality, reliability and sheer speed when overclocked. The TWINX1024-4400C25PT once again lives up to Corsair’s high reputation.

The memory turns out to be extremely speedy as one would expect. Check out the full review at BigBruin.

Vantec AeroFlow 2 Air Cooler Heatsink Review @ A1 Electronics

Posted on June 16, 2005 8:54 AM by Rob Williams

For those that have seen our earlier Vantec AeroFlow review this AeroFlow 2 has more cooling performance as it uses a more powerful fan. We have to say that the noise from this fan was not bad either, quite acceptable. The overall result being that this Vantec AeroFlow 2 is more powerful than the AeroFlow.

Seriously great looking cooler! How well does it perform? Check out the review at A1 Electronics.

Mushkin Redline XP Memory @ Legit Reviews

Posted on June 15, 2005 8:55 AM by Rob Williams

Mushkin Enhanced Memory has been a player in the DRAM market for years and just recently has taken another jab into the heart of the enthusiast market. This time around Mushkin has secured a number of Winbond based UTT IC’s that have been packaged and put on some Brain Power 815 PCB’s. The end result was not only a new part number, but a whole new memory series called Mushkin Redline XP (Extreme Performance). Mushkin states that their Redline memory series eliminates the memory as a potential hardware bottleneck when overclocking their DDR1 systems. Today, we take a look at their XP4000 2-2-2 Redline memory and see if it is all that Mushkin says it to be.

2-2-2-6 @ 3.3v – 3.5v? You will need some nice cooling there. Head over to Legit Reviews for the full look.

Aspire X-Cruiser @ OCIA

Posted on June 15, 2005 8:53 AM by Rob Williams

I’ve been noticing a trend lately with the modding community. I started seeing all of these analog gauges on cases, fan controllers, etc. At first, I was just asking “why”… until I took a closer look. Not everything in the modding world has a real function. Why do we need lights on our fans? What’s the point of a window? And who really cares if you can see your CD-Rom drive? The answers to these questions are simple, because it looks cool!

This is a very unique case, but looks cool. The three Gauges on the front panel are a nice addition. Check out the full review at OCIA.

How Smart is Your Game Store Clerk?

Posted on June 15, 2005 8:47 AM by Rob Williams

The average EGM reader scoffs at the thought of asking game-store counter jockeys for advice; you know-it-alls don’t need their help. But what about your non-gaming friends, your grandma, your significant other—anyone who relies on over-the-counter know-how? We sent our spy, posing as a clueless girlfriend shopping for her gamer beau, on a quest for flimflam advice at four major game retailers. An unscientific survey? Surely. But some of these clerks’ comments are good for a laugh, too.

If you regularly shop at game stores, I know we’ve all had these idiots behind the counter. This is a great read. Source: Shack News.

Saitek Gamers Keyboard @ XtremeComputing

Posted on June 15, 2005 8:33 AM by Rob Williams

If I were to be brutally honest, I would tell you the first few days of using this keyboard, I thought to myself plug the z- board back in. But that was only because I kept pressing wrong keys and found it quite hard to even get a positive score in online gaming. I found I was always pressing the one button at the wrong time. But hey it’s not the keyboard fault its keys are really responsive and it wasn’t its fault I had got used to the Z-board. But that’s were it stopped, I thought right to get used to this keyboard I am going to write a few reviews on it as I find that always helps with getting used to a new key layout…

ATI’s All-in-Wonder X800 XT graphics card @ Tech Report

Posted on June 15, 2005 8:31 AM by Rob Williams

THE PC GRAPHICS market is about as competitive as it comes, with ATI and NVIDIA constantly striving to one-up each other and capture the performance crown at each price point. Given that incredibly competitive environment, it’s odd that ATI’s high-end All-in-Wonder cards haven’t really had much competition. It’s not for a lack of trying on NVIDIA’s part, either. The green team took a stab at the All-in-Wonder market with the Personal Cinema, but its software was way behind ATI’s, and Personal Cinema products were largely confined to low-end parts. The Personal Cinema never really made the jump to the GeForce 6 series, either.

If you are looking to buy an AIW card, check out this review first.
