Gizmondo Anyone? @ Hexus

Posted on March 25, 2005 11:50 AM by Rob Williams

“A quick ping around the industry gives us a serious concern about the number of units which has actually hit the press – but more of a worry is the number of units which shipped to their flagship store on Regents Street, London. Time will tell.”

What is Gizmondo? Check Hexus to find out.

Icemat Siberia Multi Headset @ A True Review

Posted on March 25, 2005 11:42 AM by Rob Williams

“In an ideal gaming environment, we would be able to setup high quality
speakers and play in glass-shattering glory. Unfortunately, we are not
always in the ideal environment and the use of rattling speakers is not
always practical or allowed. Whether it be complaining neighbors,
roommates, or fellow LAN gamers (imagine every gamer at a LAN party with
speakers at full blast ;-) ; this is where headsets come in. Headsets allow
you to game without disturbing those around. They also have a microphone
for games that utilize it.

This review will look at a headset from a well respected mouse pad company,
the Siberia Multi Headset from Icemat. Does the Siberia deserve a spot on
your head? Read on and find out.”

Linspire Five-0 (5.0.59)

Posted on March 25, 2005 11:39 AM by Rob Williams

“At Phoronix, we are constantly asked “What Linux distro do you prefer, and why?” As any frequent visitor probably realizes, most of our testbeds are loaded with Red Hat’s Fedora as that what we had settled for after several months of testing different distributions such as Slackware, SuSE, Mandrake, MEPIS, Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, and the list goes on. Surprisingly enough, one of the distributions we never tried was Linspire, formerly known as Lindows, which is said to be “The Worlds Easiest Desktop Linux.” Today, we will be trying Linspire’s latest release, Linspire Five-0.”

This is one Distro I have yet to try. Looks promising though. Check it out at Phoronix.

D-Link DGL-4300 Wireless 108G Gaming Router @ Viperlair

Posted on March 24, 2005 5:46 PM by Rob Williams

“D-Link has brought to market a product that is both powerful and easy enough for most to understand (as long as you are willing to read the manual some). Not only have they provided you with a rather complete list of supported games, they have given you the ability to manipulate this with your own settings if you so desire.”

Thermaltake Sonic Tower @ InsaneTek

Posted on March 24, 2005 5:44 PM by Rob Williams

“A fanless CPU cooler doesn’t always mean high temperatures. Thermaltake’s fanless Sonic Tower provides great performance at 0 dBA.”

Very cool looking. Check it out at InsaneTek.

Gigabyte 8IPE775-G ‘Springdale’ Motherboard @ Hexus

Posted on March 24, 2005 5:34 PM by Rob Williams

“Gigabyte has tried to create a motherboard that takes the forward-thinking approach of Socket-T and marries it with established Springdale technology. The end result is a hybrid board, unimaginatively named 8IPE775-G, that will last as long as Socket-T is around. It’s also priced at a wallet-friendly £60 and makes use of regular DDR1 RAM and AGP-powered graphics cards, thus making the jump to LGA775 a palatable one for most.”

ATi’s Cap’n Hook Raids NVIDIA’s Booty @ Hexus

Posted on March 24, 2005 2:22 PM by Rob Williams

“Select journalists at the CeBIT trade fair in Germany were tittled at the tattle of eyewitness reports of Chris Hook, ATi Technologies’ EMEA PR Manager, seemingly out on a cruise… to recruit senior NVIDIA employees in to ATi. Apparently Chris’ efforts seemingly went unrewarded at that stage, but HEXUS has just learnt that ATi may have just recruited two key NVIDIA people.”

Wow that’s interesting.. Going to be fun to see if anything comes from this. Since they apparently didn’t have to sign any confidentiality agreements prior to joining Nvidia in the first place. Read more at Hexus.

Steam Updates

Posted on March 24, 2005 2:04 PM by Rob Williams

It looks like Steam has gotten a whack of updates. In Counter-Strike specifically.. now you have a “Buy Favorite” option that you can set. Also, now when a teammate speaks in chat, you can see where they are.

Now, if there is an enemy behind a smoke cloud, you will not get an “Enemy Spotted” message.. so as to make it more difficult. There are more updates to be had by updating your Steam client, simply by opening it. You can read about the updates here.

Super White 7654-47CW Barebones Kit Review @ MikhailTech

Posted on March 24, 2005 1:48 PM by Rob Williams

“The inside of the case is, big surprise, nothing special. The front uses a single cage for mounting all the drives using good ‘ol screws. There’s a stamped grill with holes for an 80mm intake, but as is the problem with many cases even to this day, it’s pretty much useless since there’s no opening in front of it to take in air. Around back we have the PSU, 80mm fan, non-removable I/O shield, and the expansion slots. If you look closely you’ll notice the protrusion mentioned earlier which holds the expansion cards in place. Finally, the motherboard tray isn’t removable either. You’ll find raised mounts where typical motherboard holes can be found; for the rest you’ll need to install the somewhat awkward provided plastic stand-offs.”

I am having a hard time grasping why they call it Super White. Check out the full review at MikhailTech.

Gigabye GA-8N-SLi Royal Spy Pics

Thanks to Akiba, we can now see some pictures of the unreleased Gigabyte 8N-SLi Royal motherboard. The board supports a P4 with 1066FSB, with 4 sticks of Dual DDR667. It also seems to support a RAID support for 6 HDD’s. And of course, what makes this board more special is it’s SLi support.

Canada to tighten digital copyright law

Posted on March 24, 2005 1:39 PM by Rob Williams

“Canada’s administration announced today that it will introduce new legislation aimed at tailoring the country’s copyright law toward the Net age. The country has been an outlier in the world, with courts ruling that file-swapping is legal, for example.”

Up to now, there haven’t been any people sued in Canada for downloading music over P2P. I could be wrong. With this new legislation.. that may change. Check it out at News.com Blog.

HP LaserJet 2420-DN Network Laser Printer Review @ PC Stats

Posted on March 24, 2005 1:37 PM by Rob Williams

“A good quality laser printer is still an essential for any office where printing is required. We work in an office ourselves, and we know how difficult it can be to find reliable unbiased information in the less-than-sexy area of reliable business equipment. We’ve taken a look at several laser printers over the last few months, and today we’re pleased to have another one in-house. The Hewlett-Packard Laserjet 2420dn model that we’re looking at is a networked monochrome laser printer with a 1200×1200 maximum resolution, 64MB of onboard memory (expandable to 320MB), 350 sheet paper capacity, a built-in HP JetDirect Ethernet print server, and automatic duplex printing.”

DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D Motherboard @ Big Bruin

Posted on March 24, 2005 9:01 AM by Rob Williams

“DFI was kind enough to send over one of the Lanparty nF4 UT Ultra-D boards for us to review. The Ultra-D shares the same base board with its bigger brothers, but omits the SLI features and the extra SIL 3114 based SATA controller with its additional 4 ports. There are a few other minor items missing from the Ultra-D and we will get into those throughout the review. The Chipset of the Ultra-D is the nF4 Ultra; where as the other two boards both run the nF4-SLI chip.”

Great motherboard for sure. Check out the review at Big Bruin.

Workstation Battle Royale : Xeon 3.6 GHz / 2MB vs. Opteron 252 @ GamePC

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:58 AM by Rob Williams

Battle of the beasts!

“Both processors have proven to give top of the line performance in certain areas, and while neither chip truly dominated the performance charts, both processor lines continued to sell fairly well. Fortunately for us, both companies are hungry for a bigger slice of the workstation pie, which forces them to try to up the ante once again. As simple clock speed boosts don’t seem to have the effect they used to, both Intel and AMD have worked improving their processor lines all around, with not only with performance adding features like higher clock speeds and more cache, but improved instruction support and the ability to consume less power.”

Good lengthy writeup, and you can check it out at GamePC.

Gateway M210XL Review @ Design Technica

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:57 AM by Rob Williams

“The M210 series of laptops from Gateway is the company’s new line of lightweight laptop computers and competes directly with Sony’s S series, Dell’s new 700M, and a few of Panasonic’s more stylish Toughbook laptops among other brands. Weighing in at 5.29lbs the M210 is Gateway’s lightest laptop currently available and features a wide-screen display and some pretty powerful hardware under the hood.”

IceMat Siberia multi-media headphones @ A1 Electronics

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:47 AM by Rob Williams

“Otherwise when we compared these IceMat Siberia headphones to some very expensive HiFi headphones we found the sound quality to be very good indeed and only lacking by a small amount on the base response. But that is easily compensated for by slightly increasing the base gain.”

Head over to A1 Electronics for the review.

OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Gold VX Memory @ 3D Gameman

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:46 AM by Rob Williams

“The OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Gold VX Memory performs very well, is highly overclockable, affordable and the voltage can be pushed to the extreme without voiding the warrantee. The timing on this memory is 2-3-3-8 at 2.6V and a very fast 2-2-2-8 at 3.2V. Also, this memory can be increased to 3.5V for added tweaking. Watch the Video to find out more…”

Sunbeam Samurai Case @ ThinkComputers.org

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:40 AM by Rob Williams

“Sunbeam has always been long hailed as one of the leaders in computer modding innovations. In the past they have been known for some of the highest quality products this side of Vantec. In recent months they have been somewhat quiet, however. Until now. Sunbeam has unleashed several new series of cases and accessories that we will be looking at that will attempt to move them back into that LED illuminated lime light. Today’s feature is a new style of case from them, the Samurai.”

Apple settles with Tiger leaker

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:38 AM by Rob Williams

“Apple said on Wednesday that it has reached a settlement with 22-year-old Doug Steigerwald. It did not discuss the details of that settlement, though it does involve money being paid to Apple, according to Steigerwald. The company still has legal action pending against two other men in the case, which was filed in December in federal court in San Jose, Calif.”

They didn’t publicly admit how much money is involved, but I am sure it’s going to be hefty. Read it at News.com.

Australian school bans iPod

Posted on March 24, 2005 8:36 AM by Rob Williams

“A private school in Australia has banned its pupils from listening to their iPods. The yuppie consumer gadget will not be permitted in class, because it encourages kids to be selfish and lonely, according to the school principal. That’s the perfect preparation for the life of David Brent-style bullshit and self-deception that lies ahead of them, you’d think, but amazingly, the principal of the International Grammar School has higher hopes for her brood.”

So.. if you use an iPOD, you must be lonely. Read it at The Register.
