Tech Toys for the boys at IDF

Posted on March 3, 2005 5:20 PM by Rob Williams

“THERE WERE MORE TOYS on the IDF show floor this year, with a few being definite standouts. LSI had an 8 port SATA-II RAID card on the show floor, but the SAS devices were the stars of the booth. They had a demo of SAS scalability in a box, or three boxes. The LSISAS3800x card is a 8 port SAS controller, it was running into a box with two LSISASx12 12 port SAS expander. These had 8 drives each for a total of 16 in that box. This was cascaded into a 12 port box with all bays filled. In total, you had the card powering 28 drives, several cascaded off each other, that’s a lot of spindle for a single card.”

8 Port SATA-II card? Dayum.. better have a good sized case. Check out the article at The Inq.

New Netscape 8.0 Beta

Posted on March 3, 2005 5:13 PM by Rob Williams

Looks like Netscape has released a new version of their browser, 8.0, and it is in public beta state. So if you are a Netscape user, and want to see what’s new, check it out.

The new browser comes with new “anti-fraud” techniques, so that’s nothing to complain about. The main concern seems to be combating Phishing techniques.. which are very easy to fall for. Also included with this version is a new way to add RSS feeds to the browser [FireFox 1.0, anyone?]. I’m personally not a fan of Netscape.. but hey, ANYTHINGS better than IE. Download the beta here.

Posted on March 3, 2005 3:46 PM by Rob Williams

“Thus we hope you learn from our waste of money that while this computer H20 heatsink pipe is more flexible and comes with the companies name printed on it as far as we are concerned is only fit for the rubbish bin. We will only be using..”

GeIL iBALL MPV (MP3 Plus Video) Player Video Review @ 3D Gameman

Posted on March 3, 2005 3:44 PM by Rob Williams

“The GeIL iBALL MPV Player is more than just a plain MP3 player, it also plays streaming video. It has an FM tuner, picture viewer, & much more. It’s currently available in 256MB, 512MB & 1GB storage options but because it’s only USB 1.1, the result is very slow file transfers. Other than that it’s easy to use, compact, looks great & is feature rich. Watch the Video to find out more…”

Scythe Kamaboko @ Phoronix

Posted on March 3, 2005 3:42 PM by Rob Williams

“When pulling the Scythe Kamaboko heatsink out of its packaging, we were astounded at its immense size. In our testing labs, we have a Pentium 4 system with a Prescott core, which refuses to remain cool regardless of what we throw on it. In this review, we’ll see if the Scythe Kamaboko CPU Cooler can tame our smoking hot Socket 478 processor.”

Thermalright XP-90 @ nV News

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:10 PM by Rob Williams

“The Thermalright XP-90 has been available for quite a few months now. During that time, it has become a very popular choice for cooling many of today’s CPUs. I will be testing it in both horizontal and vertical orientations as well as with the fan blowing down into the XP-90 and pulling air away from it.”

Even though this HS has been out for a few months, they manage to freshen up the review with some origami references! Check it out at nV News.

Shuttle SB86i XPC @ T-Break

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:08 PM by Rob Williams

“The SB86i is Shuttle’s first BTX form factor XPC and above anything else, its beautiful to look it- as if its been designed by Apple. The milk white front with the blue LED and the curvy face will definitely make you keep this XPC where people can see it. Lets find out if there’s much brawn behind this beauty.”

Samsung TS-H552 DVD+RW Review @ Overclockers Club

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:05 PM by Rob Williams

“So, today we’ll be looking at something that many people are familiar with, but overlook as an important part of their PC. Samsung’s newest offering, the TS-H552 is one of these commonly overlooked pieces. The TS-H55B is non other then an Optical Drive, but a very sophisticated one at that. As a new addition to the Samsung ODD product line, will this drive be able to shine? Will it live up to the Samsung name? We’ve seen a number of their products before, and come to expect quality from Samsung, so let’s rev this drive up and see what it can do.”

Corsair XPERT Memory @ OC Tools

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:04 PM by Rob Williams

“In the world of the PC enthusiast, you always wait for something exciting and innovative to come out once in a while. You wait for something that is out of the ordinary and has never been done before. You look for a common computer hardware that when integrated with other features make it look like new and unique. Today’s enthusiast is a different breed. Performance is not only their main concern but aesthetics play a vital role as well.”

Ultrasone HFI-15G @ Hard Avenue

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:02 PM by Rob Williams

“Unlike other ‘surround’ headphone offerings, the Ultrasone HFI series does not offer gimmicky hardware or software processing, does not require a SPDIF, Toslink, or multiple mini-jack connections, and does not have silly additional speakers hanging of the front or back. What the HFI’s do feature for 3-dimensional sound is a patented technology called S-Logic Natural Surround Sound.”

Sounds like good stuff. Especially since I am in the market for new headphones! Check out the full review at Hard Avenue.

Aerocool Spiral Galaxies WTX Case @ Controlled-Insanity

Posted on March 3, 2005 1:00 PM by Rob Williams

“As this is my first review, I was very excited to recieve this case. So, suffice to say, I wasted no time taking the case out of the package. This is a beautiful case, and it is designed with overclocking in mind. It uses a new WTX standard (pseudo BTX w/ ATX hardware), and is quite a unique design.”

Great first review for sure! Be sure to check it out at Controlled-Insanity.

Thermalright SI-97 Heatsink Review @ Bjorn 3D

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:57 PM by Rob Williams

“The first thing that hit me when I received the package in the mail was how light it seemed. I opened it to make sure that there was indeed something within, and I was immediately impressed. CrazyPC had opted to include not only the SI-97, but had managed to include a fan as well. Within the heatsink’s packaging was a simple product manual, a series of fan clips for 80mm and 92mm fans, a tube of thermal compound, and a pair of rubber soundproofing strips.”

HIS X700 Pro iTurbo VIVO Edition @ ByteSector

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:56 PM by Rob Williams

“The X700 Pro IceQ is packed with a mammoth heatsink, ramsinks, UV reactive casing, dual display support, HDTV output, HIS games pack, and 460 / 960 (Core / Memory) clock timings. Is this card really as great as it sounds? Let’s find out!”

DFI LANPartyUT NF4 Ultra-D @ Legion Hardware

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:50 PM by Rob Williams

“While owners of the LANPartyUT NF4 Ultra-D are enjoying their ultra cheap ($140 US) SLI enabled motherboards, time is unfortunately running out for the rest of us. Evidently, NVIDIA are not happy that their much cheaper Ultra chipset can be easily configured to operate in SLI mode. For this reason they have set out to prevent nForce4 Ultra chipsets from being able to operate in SLI mode.”

Can never please everyone! Check out this great review over at Legion Hardware.

Bill Holds Game Makers Liable for Violence

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:44 PM by Rob Williams

A bill trying to get past, could possibly hold video game developers and game retailers responsible for real life acts of violence which is related to the video game. This of course, only applies if someone 17 years or younger purchases the game.

Not sure if I personally fully agree with this one; It does seem to have it’s share of loopholes. But, who knows.. we’ll see. Check out the posting about this over at IGN.com.

ATI TV Wonder Elite Review @ Design Technica

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:39 PM by Rob Williams

“ATI is touting the TV Wonder Elite as one of the first TV tuner cards to be certified by the Imaging Science Research Labs (ISF RL). Similar to the way THX certifies a home theater receiver for using specific components and having certain specifications, the ISF RL has worked in conjunction with Microsoft to develop an industry standard for video quality specifications for use with Windows XP Media Center Edition.”

SilverStone’s Temjin TJ06 @ Tech Report

Posted on March 3, 2005 12:37 PM by Rob Williams

“Measuring 22” tall, 8” wide, and 19” deep, the Temjin TJ06 is by no means small. At 24 lbs, this full tower case isn’t light, either. The case can accommodate standard mATX, ATX, and even E-ATX motherboards, making it a contender in the desktop, workstation, and server markets.”

Everybody needs a back breaking tower! Check out the full review at Tech Report.

Leadtek PX6800 TDH 256MB PCIe (SLI) Videocard @ PimpRig

Posted on March 2, 2005 6:06 PM by Rob Williams

“Immediately you will notice that the Leadtek PX6800 TDH is built from the green PCB of yesteryear. I found the placement of the RAM curious since I rarely see RAM situated in a 45 degree in relation to the card layout. This peculiar layout is due to Leadtek’s “Ultra Cooling System” where the RAM is placed in a radial pattern around the GPU cooler which is designed to vent air across the RAM.”

Green PCB? Odd RAM positioning? Is this a conspiracy? Find out at PimpRig.
