Update: Firaxis Officially announces Civilization VI For October 21 2016 – read more!
It seems that the next title in Sid Meier’s Civilization series could be released by next summer. In an email we received earlier from a source within the game industry, Civilization 6 was specifically mentioned as being “expected to ship” between now and the beginning of next summer. Considering the fact that neither Firaxis or 2K Games has announced the new game, the latter half of that range seems to be most probable.
Civilization V’s final expansion was released in summer 2013
It’s almost hard to believe, but come the 21st of this month, Civilization V will have been out for five years. Its second and final expansion, Brave New World, came out in the summer of 2013, so it’s been more than two years since the mainline Civilization series has been treated to significant content. During that time, the sci-fi Civilization: Beyond Earth saw a release, and Civilization V was ported to Linux.
Given this timing, it does seem likely that Civilization VI could be announced soon. With this year’s Tokyo Game Show set to begin on Thursday, it’d be great to see the game unveiled there, though the company may wish to wait until Q1 2016 when it should have a more solid release date planned.
Nonetheless, while it’s not much of a surprise to learn that a new Civilization title is in the works, it’s exciting to know that it could possibly land within the next 6 – 9 months.
