Synology’s DSM 5.1 Is Coming, And You Can Beta Test It Right Now

If our news about the DS415+ wasn’t enough to ignite renewed excitement in Synology, its newest version of DiskStation Manager (DSM) that has just been released for public consumption might take care of it. With a broad range of supported DiskStations, the DSM 5.1 beta is free to download and brings with it a considerable amount of improvements and additions.

With DSM 5.1, users can leverage their personal clouds more than ever. According to Synology “It supports synchronizing data in encrypted folders to protect privacy, and Windows ACL for more precise user privileges’ setting and File versioning in Cloud Station can now be disabled to save storage space. Cloud Sync enhancements extends coverage to six public cloud services: Dropbox, Google Drive, Baidu Cloud, and the newly-added OneDrive, Box and hubiC; broaden sharing possibilities.”

Also sporting enhanced data safety, DSM 5.1 now allows scheduling of snapshotting LUNs, and the backup performance of iSCSI LUNs is now 160% faster through the local network. Progressive security can detect potential vulnerabilities, such as weak passwords, malware, misconfigured services and pending updates. With the addition of AppArmor, Kernel-level modifications can be tightened down through stricter permissions.

Finally, collaboration tools for media and communication are now more accessible. Mobile apps have been tweaked to provide quicker searching to improved integration, with all three major platforms being touched.

The DSM beta program can be joined by anyone with a Synology NAS, and the three beta testers that provide the most valuable assistance and feedback will be rewarded with a DS214se. Who said testing betas wasn’t worth the time?
