Last month, I posted about a game I stumbled on not long before: Borderlands. This is a game that puts a major focus on cooperative play, and until I played it, I had no idea just how much fun co-op gaming could be. In fact, I regretted waiting so long to give Borderlands an honest go, because it’s in-depth, unbelievably fun, and at times, hilarious. To me, it’s a classic.
I’m still not through all of the DLC packages for the game, but for fun, I decided to take a look around for other co-op games that might be worth checking out. Well, there’s one thing I’ve figured out so far… co-op PC games are not at all common. At least on the non-RTS front. After spending much time on Valve’s Steam website, and also in Google, it’s become obvious to me that Borderlands is a very rare co-op exception.
After peering through most of Steam’s catalogue, I stumbled on just a couple of non-RTS games that feature co-op support, and most of those that did, had little appeal. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, for example, just isn’t that good of a game (to me), nor is even close to being “fun”. So it’s out. There’s Dead Rising 2, which has some major appeal, but unfortunately, my co-op buddy hates zombies. That means Left 4 Dead is also out.
Then I found a game that appealed to us both… Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. I’ve never played the game before, and had no idea of what it was all about. But, it looks like Grand Theft Auto and features co-op, so what could go wrong? Well, the fact that the game supports co-op only on the same monitor. No, I’m not joking. On the PC… the game features only local play. Sigh.
I’m still working through Borderland’s DLC, but I’m lost as to what co-op opportunities I can take advantage of after I’m through with it. There just doesn’t seem to be a major focus on co-op gameplay on the PC, and I’m curious as to why. I don’t think I know anyone that doesn’t enjoy a good co-op game, and some console games have been pulling it off well (Halo 3 springs to mind), so what’s the deal?
Am I overlooking some other quality titles? Does anyone agree with me that we need more true co-op games? Surely I can’t be alone in this!
