We learned back in June that Windows RT devices wouldn’t be seeing an upgrade to Windows 10, something that became the inevitable final nail in this digital coffin. As unfortunate as it is to those who put their faith in Microsoft’s interesting endeavor, it makes little business sense for the company to produce a major upgrade that so few (in the grand scheme) would even take advantage of.
Thanks to a point added to the official Windows 10 FAQ, though, it seems like there is a bit more life in Windows RT, tied to a minor update the OS will see next month.
Per the FAQ: “If you’re running Windows RT, your device won’t upgrade to Windows 10. We will have an update available in September 2015 that will improve the Start menu and lock screen. Check Windows Update on your Windows RT device to make sure it is ready to download the update when available.”
Given the wording, it sounds like Windows RT could be greeted to the same Start menu that Windows 10 has received, but that’s something ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley isn’t too sure of. She also writes that despite the fact that there will be ARM-based Windows 10 Mobile devices, this forthcoming update won’t enable Windows RT users to make use of the same app store. Bummer.
While Windows RT’s death has been expected for some time, it’s nice that Microsoft is going to issue one more update that changes something, even if small.
