As we covered a couple of months ago, a major shift has happened in the Maxon Redshift world: AMD support was being added. With the release of the Radeon Enterprise 22.Q2 driver today, that support has officially landed, and honestly, we couldn’t be more excited about it. Redshift is a fantastic renderer, and it’s long been a thorn in the side of Radeon creators that their GPU of choice wasn’t supported.
For this launch, AMD is focusing squarely on its top-end Radeon PRO W6800, which we reviewed last fall. The reason AMD is focusing on such a GPU should be obvious – it’s its top workstation offering, and it packs in a massive 32GB frame buffer. Support for other Radeon PROs, such as the W6600, is also present – it’s just not where AMD (or Maxon) choose to focus.
In the video above, featuring AMD’s Gary Davis, it’s noted that this Radeon adoption in Redshift didn’t just happen. AMD worked closely with Maxon to make sure this launch would go smoothly, and that desired performance targets were hit. It’s the result of proper collaboration, and we hope to see more of it going forward.
Despite the fact that the Radeon Enterprise driver hasn’t seen a release in over six months, 22.Q2 doesn’t bring that much to the table outside of the Redshift support. AMD notes that “The newest software driver contains important optimizations to improve your performance with the Radeon PRO workstation graphics cards and graphics-intensive applications.” and includes a few bug fixes.
With this driver having now dropped, we’re eager to get down to some Maxon Redshift testing in Cinema 4D shortly – as in, we’re already preparing a test machine to test the waters. We’re hoping that the latest Radeon gaming driver also includes this official support, so that we can test the current stack, and finally see how a competitor will compare to NVIDIA’s lineup. Stay tuned.
