It’s not too often that a deal like this comes around. Our friends over at Bright Side of News* spotted a special version of MAINGEAR’s X-CUBE PC that costs as much as its included graphics card. The card in this particular case (no pun) is NVIDIA’s ultra high-end TITAN Z, and its price tag is $1,499.
As a bit of a reminder, NVIDIA’s TITAN Z is in effect dual TITANs in a 3-slot design. When it launched at the end of May, it retailed for a staggering $2,999. At some point since then, presumably after the Maxwell launch last month, the card’s price was slashed to a much more reasonable price. There’s still a premium involved, given that dual GTX 980s should match this card quite handily, but TITAN Z has two things that the GTX 980 doesn’t: Excellent double-precision performance, and a 6GB framebuffer per GPU.
Considering the fact that this special X-CUBE costs as much as its GPU, I wouldn’t blame you if you thought that the rest of the PC was mediocre. But, you’d be wrong. While the gear here might not be up to the same standard as the TITAN Z, a handful of upgrades could take care of that pretty quickly.
The default configuration of this TITAN Z-equipped X-CUBE includes GIGABYTE’s Z97-DS3H motherboard, Intel’s dual-core Pentium G3258 overclocked to 4.4GHz, 8GB of Corsair DDR3-1600 memory, a 500GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive, a 600W Corsair Builder power supply, and MAINGEAR’s EPIC 120 Supercooler. And yes – its price also includes a Windows 8.1 license.
Even if you consider the fact that dual GTX 980s would at least match the TITAN Z, for about $1,100, everything else included here would still bring you well above the asking price of $1,499. I haven’t been this impressed with a deal in quite some time – I mean hell, I’ve just written five paragraphs about this one!
That being said, the TITAN Z is way too much GPU for a CPU like the Pentium G3258, so if you make one upgrade, definitely make sure it involves a Core i5 or i7. Tossing an SSD and larger storage, and perhaps some more RAM sure wouldn’t hurt, either.
