Despite the fact that securing your PC with a password is an easy way to at least try to keep your digital goods safe, many people find typing one in on each boot to be a hassle – and to be honest, so do I. But the fact remains, having no password at all is as effective in securing your data as leaving your house door unlocked while you are away.

The Register has dug up information that indicated that first Western Digital, and now Seagate, have instigated new year resolutions for 2012 that’s to trim hard drive warranties across the board. This isn’t the first cut in warranty periods from either vendor, and one has to wonder slightly at the timing of these announcements. Western…

Of all the available computer chassis on the market, a personal favorite of mine is the SHIFT, from MAINGEAR. First touted as being the base to a “supercomputer”, the company has remained ardent in keeping the chassis exclusive to those who purchase a complete PC. For those who have craved owning one but prefer to go the DIY…

When I installed a solid-state drive into my personal PC this past spring, it was magical. All of a sudden, I booted into my OS faster, applications opened quicker, and there wasn’t ever a time when I encountered OS lag due to a slow I/O. It goes without saying that games also stand to see a nice benefit when moved to an SSD…

With the launch of Intel’s Sandy Bridge-E processors last month came what seemed like a billion quad-channel memory kits to choose from. We posted about Corsair’s and Kingston’s offerings, with both companies focusing mostly on more sane 16GB kits but also offering 32GB kits for those who wanted them. I knew it wouldn’t…

Futuremark this week added a brand-new benchmark to its collection, called Powermark. Unlike PCMark and 3DMark, Powermark is designed with the professional and enterprise customer in mind, and as such, there is no free or “advanced” edition available. The goal of the tool is to simulate realistic workloads on mobile…

It might come as little surprise, but where the console vs. PC debate is concerned, I belong to the latter team, playing the vast majority of my games on the PC. Quite simply, I don’t play any current console games. It might be petty, but the level of graphical detail is appalling to me, so I stick with the older games I already own.

In what has to be a blur of names for regular users, OCZ Technology is launching the Petrol SSD family. Enthusiasts may still recall the recently launched Octane family, which harnessed the next generation of Indilinxcontrollers to deliver reasonably high levels of performance. Simply put, Petrol will be the…

Yet another Humble Bundle has launched, and this one is goood (it does in fact earn that extra ‘o’). This time around, seven excellent indie titles are up for grabs including Super Meat Boy, Bit.Trip Runner, NightSky HD, Shank and Jamestown, with Cave Story+ and Gratuitous Space Battles tossed in…

NVIDIA has just kicked off a new promotion entitled, “12 Days of Gear Up Giving”, where it’s offering its Facebookfans a chance at some sweet prizes. There’s a catch though. The prizes become better as NVIDIA’s GeForceFacebook page earns more fans, so it’s worth getting your friends to enter as…

Ever install an app and then two or three hours later come back up for air? I experienced this last night after stumbling upon GO Launcher EX, a robust app for Android that allows you to perform an ‘extreme makeover’ to make it more functional and more fun to use. It brings a lot to the table and has some of the best polish…

Google has never been shy about paying its respect to both the heroes of history and those of our time, and today, the company’s search engine logo is dedicated to none other than Robert Noyce, the co-inventor of the integrated circuit and co-founder of both Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel. In his lifetime, he was granted a total…

With the major changes HP experienced this past August, the future of its webOS mobile operating system became unclear. At the time, the company effectively pulled the plug on its own webOS-based products, and admitted that it didn’t know what it was to do with the software from there-on-out. The final decision took a lot longer to…

When NVIDIA launched its GeForce.com website last fall, I wasn’t sure what to expect of it. I had assumed it’d compete with AMD’s very similar Game.AMD.com, but the two have come to be nothing alike. Whereas AMD’s site is more for keeping up-to-date on Radeon happenings, NVIDIA has gone the extra mile to produce…

It might not be ground-breaking, but this past weekend comedian Louis C.K. released his latest show, Live at the Beacon Theatre, through his website for a mere $5 USD. This low-cost is attributed to the fact that Louis cut out the middleman and paid for the production himself. Further, he chose to release the show free of DRM…

According to some reports, Google’s Chrome has overtaken Mozilla’s Firefox in overall usage, while in others, it’s set to happen soon. On our site in the past 30 days, 39.48% of readers used Firefox, while 30.21% used Chrome – so it appears that in some cases, the gap is still quite wide (Internet Explorer is 18.61%, Safari 4.72%…

Microsoft a few days ago held an event in San Francisco showing off its ‘Windows Store’, and while the goal was to convince developers to get on with what they do best, us non-dev folk can still see what the store is going to offer once Windows 8 launches. At the same event, a spokesperson also confirmed the date for the first…

Like most gamers, no one here at Techgage is a fan of DRM – at least, DRM that worsens the experience for those who actually purchase the software, game and et cetera. We’ve talked in great deal about DRM in the past, as asimple search on our site will prove, and to date, there hasn’t been much DRM that we’ve felt solved…

I’m not sure how I missed this, but a couple of weeks ago, tech site CPU-World posted a leaked chart of upcoming Ivy Bridge CPUS – that is, the 22nm successor to Sandy Bridge. Aside from the architecture enhancements that we’d expect, it seems that there will be an Ivy Bridge model to properly succeed a Sandy Bridge one…

AMD’s Bulldozer launch was met with much criticism as its FX processors didn’t manage to perform that much better than their predecessors, much-less become better competition for Intel. Post-launch, AMD has done its share of trying to mend the lackluster launch, stating that the CPUs are more future-looking than…

One of the most talked about pieces of tech this season is Siri, the voice recognition system that Apple included on its iPhone 4S. For owners of the iPhone 4 or earlier, not being able to install Siri’s software on their phone is unfortunate, but as expected, many developers out there have been working on porting it over – to mixed…

Dell has long been considered a good choice for those just looking to get setup with a desktop or notebook and want good customer service behind it, but as far as the company’s other products go (aside from monitors), reception has often been lukewarm. And in some cases, the company has been known to discontinue…
